Little Crystal Creek Falls is probably the most popular waterfall near Townsville, Queensland. Getting there involves a winding drive through Paluma Range National Park. During the dry season, the waterfall slows to a trickle. However, as this photo shows, the wet season's rains bring it roaring to life. Below the falls, smooth rocks form natural water slides, and clear pools offer perfect swimming spots. These features make the falls a favorite destination for cooling off in the tropical heat.

The hike begins at the Hussey Road trailhead in Paluma township, leading through pristine North Queensland rainforest. It's a short 3km round trip terminated by a steep descent to the waterfall's base. At the bottom, inviting rock pools offer a refreshing swim after the hike. This trail is often deserted, providing a sense of solitude. On the day I took this photo, light rain and fog created a mystical atmosphere, enhancing the falls' natural beauty.

The rapidly flowing streams and smooth, slippery granite create a challenging environment for solo hikers like me. Despite the potential hazards, the falls showcase a striking, rugged beauty that makes the journey worthwhile. This photo captures the raw, natural allure of Jourama Falls, highlighting its unique charm within Queensland's diverse landscape.
